This full-day trip from Didim takes you inland to Sardis and Philadelphia, two of the Seven Churches of Asia named in the Book of Revelation, combining Lydian royal history, Roman monuments and early Christian heritage in a single guided excursion. After hotel pickup you travel to Sardis, today the village of Sart, set in one of the most picturesque landscapes of all the Seven Churches. In the 6th century BC it was the capital of the wealthy Lydian kingdom, and in Revelation its church was described as one that had a name for being alive but was dying.
At Sardis you visit the great Temple of Artemis, one of the largest Ionic temples ever built, and the Temple of Cybele, later converted into a Byzantine church. You also walk through the restored gymnasium complex and the reconstructed Synagogue, among the largest ancient synagogues ever found, and see the last few metres of the Royal Road of the Persian Empire, which ran from Susa to Sardis and is associated with Cyrus the Great. Nearby flows the Pactolus, the legendary golden river whose gold dust once made the Lydian kings famously rich. Lunch is served at a restaurant along the way.
The tour then continues to Philadelphia, modern Alasehir, the only one of the seven churches that received no rebuke in Revelation. Here you see the remains of a brick-built Byzantine basilica with a soaring arch and traces of 11th-century frescoes. With hotel transfers in Didim, an air-conditioned vehicle, a professional English-speaking guide, lunch and entrance fees included, this Didim day tour is ideal for travellers interested in biblical history and ancient Anatolia.

Sardis & Philadelphia Programme In the morning we pick you up from your hotel in Didim and drive inland through the Aegean countryside towards Sardis, known today as Sart. Of all the Seven Churches of Asia, Sardis enjoys one of the most beautiful settings, beneath the slopes of Mount Tmolus. In the 6th century BC it was the capital of the Lydian kingdom, and Revelation portrays its Christian community as a dying church. With your guide you explore the great Temple of Artemis and the Temple of Cybele, which was later turned into a Byzantine church. You then visit the restored gymnasium and the reconstructed Synagogue, and see the final stretch of the Persian Royal Road, built under Cyrus the Great to link Susa with Sardis. Close by runs the Pactolus, the golden river of Lydian legend. Lunch is served en route. In the afternoon the tour continues to Philadelphia, today called Alasehir, another of the Seven Churches and the only one not censured in Revelation. Here you see the remains of a brick Byzantine basilica with part of its high arch still standing and fragments of 11th-century frescoes. After the visit you are driven back and dropped off at your hotel in Didim.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
