Why visit Samos?
Samos, also known in Turkish as Sisam, is one of the greenest islands of the Aegean, with pine forests, vineyards and mountain villages. It lies so close to Turkey that from Kuşadası you can see its hills across the water.
In ancient times Samos was a rich sea power. The mathematician Pythagoras was born here, and the island’s great works, the Tunnel of Eupalinos and the sanctuary of Hera, are listed together by UNESCO as Pythagoreion and Heraion of Samos. The island is also known for its sweet Muscat wine.
What to see in Samos
Ferries from Kuşadası arrive at Vathy in the north-east. Pythagoreio and the Heraion are in the south, about 15 to 20 km away, and Kokkari is 10 km west of Vathy along the coast.
Vathy and Ano Vathy
The island capital, built around a deep bay. Above the harbour, the old quarter of Ano Vathy has red-roofed houses and narrow lanes.
Archaeological Museum of Vathy
The museum’s star is the Kouros of Samos, a marble statue of a young man about 5 metres tall, from the 6th century BC, found at the Heraion.
Pythagoreio
A pretty harbour town on the site of the ancient city of Samos, with waterfront tavernas, a castle tower and the remains of the old harbour walls.
Tunnel of Eupalinos
A water tunnel more than 1 km long, dug through a mountain in the 6th century BC by two teams working from both ends. You can walk inside part of it.
Heraion
The sanctuary of the goddess Hera, near the coast west of Pythagoreio. A single standing column shows the size of the temple, once one of the largest in Greece.
Kokkari
A former fishing village on the north coast, with pebble beaches, tavernas on the water and a steady wind loved by windsurfers.
Manolates and Vourliotes
Mountain villages on the slopes of Mount Ampelos, with stone houses, flower-filled lanes and views over the north coast.
Lemonakia and Tsamadou beaches
Two small coves near Kokkari, surrounded by pine trees, with clear green-blue water.
Potami
Near Karlovasi in the west, a beach and a forest path along a stream to small waterfalls and pools, with an old Byzantine church on the way.
Samos wine
Samos is known for its sweet Muscat wine. The Wine Museum near Vathy shows how it is made, with a tasting at the end.
