Why visit Kastellorizo?
Kastellorizo, also known in Turkish as Meis and in Greek as Megisti, is the smallest and easternmost inhabited island of the Dodecanese, only about 9 km² in area. It lies right in front of Kaş, so close that the lights of each town can be seen from the other.
Its one village wraps around a deep natural harbour, lined with tall neoclassical mansions painted in bright colours. A century ago the island was a busy trading port; today it is quiet and charming, and became known around the world through the Oscar-winning Italian film Mediterraneo (1991), which was shot here.
What to see in Kastellorizo
The village is small and everything near the harbour can be seen on foot. The Blue Grotto is reached by small boat, and the monastery and Paleokastro by footpath or taxi.
The harbour
The heart of the island, a curve of colourful mansions, cafés and fish tavernas around the water. Sea turtles are often seen swimming in the harbour.
Castle of the Knights
The ruined castle of the Knights of St John on the rock above the harbour. Its red stone gave the island its Italian name, Castello Rosso, and the view from the top looks straight across to Kaş.
Lycian rock tomb
Below the castle, a tomb cut into the cliff in the style of ancient Lycia, a reminder that the island faced the Lycian coast in antiquity.
Museums of the island
Near the castle, small museums show the history of Kastellorizo, with old photographs, costumes and finds from the island.
Blue Grotto
A large sea cave on the south-east coast, entered by a low opening. In the morning the sunlight turns the water and the walls a bright blue. Boats leave from the harbour.
Churches of Horafia
On the square behind the harbour stand the large churches of the island, including the cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helen, whose granite columns are said to come from ancient Patara on the Turkish coast.
Monastery of Agios Georgios tou Vounou
A monastery on the plateau above the village, reached by a stepped path, with a cool painted crypt under its church.
Paleokastro
The remains of the ancient acropolis of the island on a hill west of the village, with walls and a cistern.
Mandraki
A small bay on the other side of the castle hill, with a quiet waterfront and a short walk from the harbour.
