Samos lies in the eastern Aegean, between Chios to the north and Patmos to the south, so close to the Turkish coast that it is clearly visible from Kusadasi. The island reached its peak in the 6th century BC, when it was renowned for its powerful navy, its wine and its great sanctuary of Hera. It later joined the Delian League, and it is the birthplace of the philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras and of the astronomer Aristarchus. In the 1st century BC both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony stayed here before the island faded into a quieter role under the Roman Empire. Its ancient heritage, the Pythagoreion and the Heraion, is recognised by UNESCO.
