Why visit Rhodes?
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and one of the sunniest places in Greece. It lies only about 18 km from the Turkish coast, so it is an easy addition to a holiday in Marmaris or Fethiye. The island has more than 3,000 years of history: three ancient Greek cities, the Colossus that once stood at its harbour, and two centuries under the Knights of St John.
The Knights ruled Rhodes from 1309 to 1522 and built the walled town that still stands today. The Medieval City of Rhodes has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 and is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe, with people still living inside its walls. Outside the town you find beaches on two seas, green hill villages, pine forests and the white village of Lindos.
What to see in Rhodes
These are the places most visitors want to see. Our tours cover Lindos, Kamiros, Filerimos, the Butterflies Valley, the 7 Springs, Kallithea and Symi. You can explore the Old Town on foot from Rhodes Town.
Medieval Old Town
A UNESCO World Heritage Site inside 4 km of walls, with gates, towers and a moat. Walk its cobbled lanes, small squares and markets, and visit the Archaeological Museum in the old Hospital of the Knights.
Palace of the Grand Master
The fortress-palace at the top of the Old Town was the seat of the Knights of St John. It was rebuilt in the 1930s and today shows mosaics, statues and furnished halls.
Street of the Knights
Ippoton Street climbs from the harbour to the palace. Its stone inns housed the Knights by their home nations, called Tongues, such as France, Italy and Spain.
Lindos and its Acropolis
The white village of Lindos lies under a rock crowned by the Acropolis. Inside the Knights’ walls stand the Temple of Athena Lindia and a long Hellenistic stoa, with views over two bays.
St Paul’s Bay
A small, almost closed bay just below the Acropolis of Lindos. Tradition says the Apostle Paul landed here, and a white chapel stands on the shore.
Ancient Kamiros
One of the three ancient cities of Rhodes, on a slope above the west coast. You can walk its streets, houses, temple area and water cistern.
Butterflies Valley
Petaloudes is a cool, shaded valley with a stream, wooden bridges and sweetgum trees. In summer, thousands of Jersey tiger moths gather on the tree trunks.
Filerimos Hill
A wooded hill above Ialysos with the Monastery of Our Lady of Filerimos, the remains of an ancient temple of Athena and wide views of the north coast.
7 Springs
Epta Piges is a green valley where seven springs feed a small lake. You can walk through a narrow water tunnel, built in the 1930s, to reach it.
Kallithea Springs
An old spa on the coast near Faliraki. The domed rotunda and arcades from the 1920s stand above a rocky cove with clear water.
Symi
A short sail from Rhodes, Symi has a harbour of colourful neoclassical houses and the Monastery of the Archangel Michael at Panormitis.
Arriving on Rhodes by ferry from Turkey
Ferries to Rhodes leave from Marmaris and Fethiye, and in summer also from Bodrum, and arrive in Rhodes Town, a short walk from the Old Town walls. The crossing from Marmaris takes about an hour by fast ferry. Sailing days and times change with the season, and in winter there are fewer boats.
Bring your passport. Greece is in the Schengen area, so check whether you need a visa before you travel. Our tours pick up from hotels on Rhodes. If you come from Turkey for the day, tell us your ferry times and we will check port pick-up and which tour fits your hours on the island.
