My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
The daily Bafa Lake tour from Didim is a peaceful, fully guided day tour to one of the most atmospheric corners of the Aegean, where a broad lake lies beneath the rugged granite peaks of Mount Latmos. On this daily excursion you combine birdlife and quiet countryside with the scattered ruins of Herakleia, a town steeped in myth.
Until Roman times Bafa was a bay of the Aegean, but the River Meander gradually filled the gulf with sediment and by around 400 AD the link to the open sea was gone. Today the lake measures about 15 km long and 10 km wide and reaches depths of around 25 metres. It is mostly fresh water with a partly salty section, and its waters hold sea bass, eels and carp. The reeds and islets attract a remarkable range of birds, which is why the area is valued by nature lovers and photographers.
Herakleia, also called Latmos after the mountain above it, was built as a port and lived from farming, fishing and sea trade. When the silt closed its outlet to the sea, the town lost its livelihood and slowly declined. The dramatic setting of boulders, walls and water inspired many legends, the best known being that of Selene, who sent the shepherd Endymion into eternal sleep so she could visit him each night. This Bafa Lake day trip includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Didim, a professional English-speaking guide and all entrance fees listed in the programme.

Bafa Lake & Herakleia Programme Your day begins with pickup from your hotel in Didim and a drive in an air-conditioned coach to Bafa Lake with your English-speaking guide. Along the shore your guide explains how this lake was once the head of a sea gulf, until sediment brought down by the River Meander sealed it off from the Aegean around 400 AD. You learn about its size, its mix of fresh and brackish water, the sea bass, eels and carp living in it, and the many bird species such as pelicans and storks that make it a haven for wildlife, as well as the olive, cotton and honey production of the surrounding villages. The visit continues to the ruins of Herakleia, the old harbour town set at the foot of 1,375 m Mount Latmos, which prospered on agriculture, fishing and maritime trade before the silting of the bay brought its decline. Among the rocks and ancient walls, your guide recounts the myth of Selene, goddess of the moon, and her beloved Endymion and describes how the mountain kept its holy reputation into the Byzantine period. At the end of the tour you are transferred back to your hotel in Didim.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
