Our Jewish heritage tour of Istanbul traces more than five hundred years of Jewish life in the city, from the hillside lanes of Galata to the old houses of Balat on the Golden Horn. This full-day daily excursion combines historic synagogues with one of the world's great monuments, Hagia Sophia, under the guidance of an English-speaking expert.
This Jewish Heritage Day Tour also works as a shore excursion from the Istanbul cruise port — a popular choice for passengers who have one day ashore. As a private excursion it is fully flexible — pickup is right at the pier, the pace follows your group, and we make sure you are back on board well before departure. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Simply share your cruise itinerary and the date you are in Istanbul, and we will reserve your places.
Galata was for centuries a lively, multicultural port district where Jewish merchants and craftsmen lived alongside Genoese, Greek and Armenian neighbours. Neve Shalom, opened in 1951, is the largest synagogue in Istanbul, while the Ashkenazi Synagogue recalls the Central European families who settled here in the 19th century. Across the water, Balat became home to Sephardic Jews welcomed by the Ottomans after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. Ahrida, with its boat-shaped bimah, and the more modest Yanbol were both founded by communities arriving from the Balkans, and in Balat you can still spot the Star of David on some building facades.
This Istanbul day trip suits travellers interested in faith, history and the multicultural story of the city. As a daily tour from Istanbul it lasts about eight hours, with travel between the districts in an air-conditioned vehicle and a return transfer to your hotel at the end of the day. Entrance fees for the sites in the itinerary are covered, while lunch is at your own expense. Please dress modestly for synagogue and mosque visits and bring your passport, as synagogues usually check identity at the door.

Jewish Heritage of Istanbul Programme The day begins in Galata, a historic Jewish neighbourhood on the hill above the Golden Horn, where your guide shows you the Galata Tower, raised by the Genoese in 1303. Walking through the quarter, we visit two synagogues at the centre of Istanbul's Jewish life today: Neve Shalom, the city's largest, and the Ashkenazi Synagogue, founded by families from Central Europe. After a break for a traditional lunch at your own expense, we cross to the old city to visit Hagia Sophia, the 6th-century masterpiece listed by UNESCO, and learn how it has served as cathedral, mosque, museum and mosque again. In the afternoon we drive to Balat, one of Istanbul's oldest quarters, where the Star of David still decorates some of the houses. Here we enter two synagogues dating back to the 15th century, Ahrida and Yanbol, built by Jewish communities who settled in the city during the Ottoman era. The programme also includes a stop at the Jewish Home for the Elderly on the Golden Horn, offering an insight into the social life of the community. At the end of this eight-hour cultural day, we return you to your hotel.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
