The Blue Mosque was raised in the early 17th century under Sultan Ahmed I and is still an active place of worship; inside, thousands of hand-painted Iznik tiles give the prayer hall its famous blue glow. A few steps away stands Hagia Sophia, first founded in the 4th century and rebuilt by Emperor Justinian in the 6th. For almost a thousand years it was the largest church in Christendom, later became an imperial mosque, served for decades as a museum and today welcomes visitors again as a mosque, with Byzantine mosaics and Ottoman calligraphy side by side.

Between the two monuments lies the Hippodrome of Constantinople, where crowds once cheered chariot teams. Its surviving landmarks tell three different stories: the Egyptian obelisk brought by Theodosius, the bronze Serpentine Column from Delphi and the neo-Byzantine German Fountain presented by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The tour also points you to the Grand Bazaar, a labyrinth of covered streets selling carpets, jewellery, spices and souvenirs.
