This daily Galata Jewish district tour uncovers more than a thousand years of Jewish life in Istanbul through the streets, synagogues and buildings of one of the city's oldest quarters. Guided by a professional English-speaking guide and finishing with a transfer back to your hotel, this daily Istanbul tour is an absorbing day tour for anyone interested in history, architecture and the many communities that shaped the city.
This Galata Jewish Walking Tour also works as a shore excursion from the Istanbul cruise port — a popular choice for passengers who have one day ashore. As a private excursion it is fully flexible — pickup is right at the pier, the pace follows your group, and we make sure you are back on board well before departure. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Simply share your cruise itinerary and the date you are in Istanbul, and we will reserve your places.
After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II encouraged Jewish families to settle in the city to help bring it back to life. A few decades later, Sephardic Jews forced out of Spain and Portugal found refuge across the Ottoman Empire, and many of those who came to Istanbul made their homes in Galata, on the northern shore of the Golden Horn, where an earlier Jewish community already lived. Their presence is still visible in the neighbourhood's synagogues, schools and apartment blocks.
The Ashkenazi Synagogue, built around 1900 by Jews from Central and Eastern Europe, stands out with its European-style facade. The Jewish Museum presents the history, traditions and daily life of the community, while the curving, terraced Kamondo Stairs recall the Kamondo family of bankers and philanthropists, whose name is closely tied to Galata. This daily excursion is easy to fit into a stay, as the quarter lies only a short ride from Istanbul's main hotel districts, and it makes a meaningful half-day Galata day trip. Lunch is not included, and modest dress is recommended for synagogue visits.

Galata Jewish Heritage Programme Your guide meets you and begins the walk in Galata, the old hillside district across the Golden Horn from the historic peninsula, home to a Jewish community since the early Ottoman period. Along the way you hear how Sultan Mehmed II invited Jewish settlers to repopulate the city after 1453 and how refugees from Spain and Portugal later found a new home here. The route leads to the major synagogues of the district, including the Ashkenazi Synagogue, and to the Jewish Museum, where exhibits explain centuries of community life in Istanbul. You then pass historic Jewish apartment buildings and other places of cultural importance, and walk the graceful Kamondo Stairs while learning about Abram Kamondo and the family's lasting imprint on the neighbourhood. The walk ends near the Galata Tower, with time for photos of the lively streets, after which you are transferred back to your hotel.

It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
