This Christian heritage tour from Istanbul traces nearly two thousand years of Christian life in the former Constantinople, from Byzantine walls and Orthodox sanctuaries to a Catholic basilica on Istiklal Avenue. Over seven fully guided hours, this day tour links the shores of the Golden Horn with the hilltop neighbourhoods of Galata and Beyoglu, giving history lovers and photographers a single, well-paced daily excursion through the city's many faiths.
Arriving in Istanbul on a cruise ship? The Christian Heritage Tour is one of the shore excursions we regularly arrange for cruise guests calling at the port of Istanbul. Because it runs as a private tour, we plan the timing around your ship: your guide and driver meet you at the cruise terminal, and the programme is adjusted to your all-aboard time. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Send us your ship name and the date of your call in Istanbul and we will confirm availability.
The route begins along the Golden Horn, the natural harbour that sheltered Byzantine fleets. In Fener you visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which has guided the Orthodox world for centuries, before continuing to Balat and the Bulgarian Iron Church, whose iron panels were shipped in from Europe and assembled on the waterfront. The narrow lanes of Balat, where Greek, Armenian and Jewish families once lived side by side, show how three religions shared the same streets for generations.
Further south, the Theodosian Walls and the Golden Gate recall the emperors who entered Constantinople in triumph; the gate was later enclosed within the Ottoman Yedikule Fortress. The Little Hagia Sophia, built as the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, is admired for its domed octagonal plan. After a break for Turkish food at a local restaurant, you climb the 14th-century Galata Tower for views over the Old City, the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara, then walk Istiklal Avenue to Saint Antoine, completed in 1912. This Istanbul day trip suits travellers aged 12 and over; entrance fees on the route are covered, lunch is paid locally, and the daily Istanbul tour ends with a return transfer to your hotel.

Golden Horn, Balat & Christian Landmarks Programme The day opens with an easy walk beside the Golden Horn, where your guide sets the scene for Istanbul's long Christian story. The first visit is the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in Fener, historically one of the fourteen self-governing Orthodox churches and still a place of deep religious meaning. Next comes Balat, with its painted wooden houses at the foot of the old walls, and the Bulgarian Iron Church, assembled in 1898 from materials brought from Europe. The drive then follows the ancient Walls of Constantinople to the Golden Gate, the former imperial entrance now set within Yedikule Fortress. Back in the historic peninsula you step inside the Little Hagia Sophia, an early Byzantine church often seen as a forerunner of the Hagia Sophia. A lunch stop at a local restaurant offers a chance to taste Turkish cuisine (meal cost not included). In the afternoon you cross to Galata and climb the 14th-century Genoese tower for panoramic views of the Old City, the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara. A stroll along Istiklal Avenue leads to Saint Antoine Catholic Church, finished in 1912, before the tour closes with a transfer back to your hotel.

It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
