St. Nicholas Island, known locally as Gemile Island, is a small, rocky island lying in the bay between Oludeniz and Kayakoy. Between roughly the 4th and 7th centuries it was home to a thriving Byzantine community, and archaeologists have uncovered several churches, chapels, houses and a long covered processional walkway that climbs toward the summit. Many historians link the island with Saint Nicholas, the bishop of nearby Myra who inspired the figure of Santa Claus, which gives the ruins a special atmosphere at dusk.
