Pamukkale, meaning "Cotton Castle" in Turkish, was formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich thermal water flowed down the slope and left layers of calcium carbonate behind. The result is a cascade of pale terraces and natural basins that glow almost blue in the sunlight. Above them lies Hierapolis, founded in the 2nd century BC and later a flourishing Roman health resort. Visitors came from across the empire to bathe in its springs, and the city left behind baths, colonnaded streets, a grand theatre and one of the largest necropolises of Asia Minor.

As a daily excursion this is a long day, so expect an early start around 08:00 and a return to Oludeniz in the evening. Footwear must be removed on the travertines, so bring a small bag for your shoes, plus sunscreen, a hat and swimwear if you plan to bathe. Entrance to the archaeological site is included; the separate Antique (Cleopatra) Pool charges its own fee and is not part of the package.
