Tlos rises on a steep rock outcrop above the Xanthos Valley and was among the most important cities of the Lycian League. Its slopes are carved with house-shaped tombs, while the summit is crowned by fortifications rebuilt in the Ottoman period; below lie the remains of a Roman theatre. Saklikent, whose name means hidden town, is a narrow gorge cut deep into the Akdag mountains, where snowmelt keeps the water refreshingly cold even in midsummer.
Xanthos was the political heart of Lycia and is remembered for the dramatic resistance of its citizens in antiquity; its theatre, pillar tombs and agora still stand today. Nearby Patara, birthplace of Saint Nicholas, is backed by dunes and protected as a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles. This daily excursion suits travellers who enjoy history as much as the outdoors; bring swimwear, a towel and shoes you do not mind getting wet in the canyon. Lunch is not included, so allow some money for a meal during the day.

Tlos, Saklikent, Xanthos & Patara Jeep Safari Programme Your guide meets you in the lobby of your Oludeniz hotel in the morning and you are driven to Fethiye, where the jeeps line up and set off together at around 9:00. The first stop is the ancient city of Tlos, perched on a steep hill, where you see the Ottoman castle at the top, the rock-cut Lycian tombs on the cliff face and the Roman theatre. The safari then continues to Yakapark, a trout farm surrounded by running water, before heading into Saklikent Canyon. Here you can walk and wade through the narrow gorge in cold, clear spring water, climbing gently towards a waterfall. After a break for lunch (at your own expense), the convoy drives on to Xanthos, the old Lycian capital, for a look at its ruins. The final stop is Patara, the longest sandy beach in Turkey, where there is time to swim in the turquoise sea and relax on the sand. At the end of the day you are transferred back to your hotel in Oludeniz.
