This daily Didyma, Miletus and Priene tour from Didim is a guided day tour through three of the most rewarding ancient sites on the Aegean coast: an oracle sanctuary of Apollo, a powerful trading city of philosophers, and a hillside town admired by Alexander the Great. Hotel pick-up, lunch and entrance fees are included, so this daily excursion lets you focus entirely on the stories behind the stones.
Didyma was never a city but a sacred oracle site devoted to Apollo, god of prophecy, and it remained an important pilgrimage centre until the spread of Christianity. Its temple is breathtaking in scale, slightly larger than a football pitch, with richly carved columns that reach about 19.5 metres. Miletus, by contrast, was one of the wealthiest Greek cities, founding some 90 colonies and acting for centuries as a leading trade centre of Anatolia. It was home to natural philosophers such as Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes, the geographer Hecataeus and the planner Hippodamus, who pioneered the grid street plan here. The city was also known for athletic games, and the flaming tripod later linked with the Olympics is said to recall its harbour lighthouse.
Priene, founded in 350 BC, enjoys one of the finest settings of the ancient world. Ruled in turn by Ionians, Lydians and Persians before Alexander the Great, it became his favourite place to stay in Asia Minor, later passing to Pergamon, Rome and Byzantium until earthquakes and malaria emptied it. This Didyma day trip from Didim involves walking over uneven ground, so bring comfortable shoes, a hat and water.

Didyma, Miletus & Priene Programme Your guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in the morning and the first stop is Didyma, the sacred home of Apollo's oracle. Here you walk around the enormous Temple of Apollo, learning how pilgrims came to consult the god and how the sanctuary kept its importance until Christianity replaced the old beliefs. The drive continues to Miletus, once among the richest Greek cities and birthplace of the first natural philosophers and of grid town planning. You explore the great Theatre, where St. Paul addressed the elders of Ephesus for the last time, as well as the Harbour Monument, the Baths of Faustina and the graceful Ilyas Bey Mosque. Lunch is included during the day. In the afternoon the tour heads to Priene, beautifully set on the slopes above the plain, where the guide shows you the fourth-century BC Temple of Athena, the council house, the fish market, the theatre and the well-preserved city walls while explaining the town's link with Alexander the Great. At the end of the visits you are transferred back to your hotel.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
