Our Fener Greek Orthodox heritage tour is a guided walk through the old Phanar quarter on the Golden Horn, the neighbourhood that has been home to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for more than four centuries. This half-day, daily excursion from Istanbul focuses on the churches, schools and mansions that keep the memory of the city's Greek community alive.
Arriving in Istanbul on a cruise ship? The Fener Greek Orthodox Tour is one of the shore excursions we regularly arrange for cruise guests calling at the port of Istanbul. Because it runs as a private tour, we plan the timing around your ship: your guide and driver meet you at the cruise terminal, and the programme is adjusted to your all-aboard time. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Send us your ship name and the date of your call in Istanbul and we will confirm availability.
The Ecumenical Patriarchate is the spiritual seat of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, and its Church of St. George keeps precious relics and icons that draw pilgrims from all over the world. Uphill stands the Phanar Greek Orthodox College, the oldest Greek Orthodox school still operating in Istanbul; its towering 19th-century brick facade dominates the skyline of the quarter. Nearby, Panagia Mouchliotissa holds a rare distinction: unlike every other Byzantine church in the city, it was never converted for Muslim worship, and the locals still call it Kanli Kilise, the Bloody Church, in memory of the struggles fought around it. The district takes its name from the Greek term for a lantern, a nod to the beacon that once guided ships into the Golden Horn.
This Fener day trip is ideal for travellers interested in history, faith and photography. As a daily tour from Istanbul it starts and ends at Taksim Square, with transport in an air-conditioned vehicle and an English-speaking guide throughout. Entrance fees for the sites in the programme are covered; lunch is not included. The streets are steep and cobbled, so comfortable shoes are essential, and modest clothing is expected inside the churches. Photography is allowed in most places, but please ask before taking pictures indoors.

Fener Greek Orthodox District Programme We meet at Taksim Square and drive in an air-conditioned vehicle to the shores of the Golden Horn, where your English-speaking guide begins the walk through Fener, the historic heart of Istanbul's Greek Orthodox community. The first visit is the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and its Church of St. George, still the spiritual centre of the Orthodox world, where your guide explains the ceremonies, icons and relics kept inside. We then climb towards the Phanar Greek Orthodox College, the striking red-brick school that is the oldest Greek Orthodox school still running in Istanbul. A short walk brings us to Panagia Mouchliotissa, the church of St. Mary nicknamed the Bloody Church, which has kept its Christian role without a break since Byzantine times. The rest of the tour is a relaxed stroll along colourful lanes lined with restored Greek houses and mansions, where Byzantine, Ottoman and later styles stand side by side, with views over the Golden Horn and towards Balat. After about five hours, including time for photographs, we return to Taksim Square where the tour ends.

It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
