Traditional Turkish Bath in Istanbul's Old City at the 18th-Century Cagaloglu Hammam

A visit to the Cagaloglu Hammam in Istanbul is one of the most authentic ways to step into Ottoman daily life. Opened in the 18th century in the historic peninsula, this graceful bathhouse still follows the classic sequence of warm, hot and cool rooms, and makes a restful half of any day tour of the old city.

Shore Excursion for Cruise Passengers in Istanbul

Cruise passengers docking in Istanbul can book the Cagaloglu Hammam Experience in Istanbul as a convenient Istanbul shore excursion during their port call. This shared tour suits cruise passengers with a full day in port; let us know your ship’s schedule and we will confirm the pickup point at the cruise terminal or offer a private alternative. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Just tell us the ship and the day it calls at Istanbul — we take care of the rest.

The Cagaloglu Hammam was built in 1741, during the reign of Sultan Mahmud I, and is often described as one of the last great public baths constructed in the Ottoman capital. Its marble interiors, light-filled domes and carefully preserved fittings show how the hammam was both a place of cleanliness and a social meeting point for centuries. The ritual begins in the warm room, where the body slowly adjusts to the heat, before moving to the domed hot room to rest on the gobektasi. Attendants then scrub the skin with a kese and lather you in a cloud of soapy foam, after which you cool down in the relaxing lounge with a glass of tea or traditional sherbet. Optional extras such as a foot massage, an aromatherapy massage in a private room, a collagen mask or a full-body clay mask can be added when booking.

This experience is self-guided and you go directly to the bath, which lies in the Alemdar quarter of Fatih, so it fits easily into a daily Istanbul tour or a daily excursion around Sultanahmet. Hotel transfers are not included, making it a simple Istanbul day trip stop for anyone already exploring the area or arriving from Istanbul's other districts. Linden shampoo, hair cream, body lotion, olive oil soap, slippers, a towel and a pestemal wrap are provided. Please note that the bath is not suitable for pregnant guests, people with heart conditions, diabetes or asthma, or anyone who has recently drunk alcohol, and children under six cannot enter.

Tour Programme ▾

Cagaloglu Hammam Bathing Ritual After booking you receive a confirmation and then your ticket by email. On the day you make your own way to the Cagaloglu Hammam in the Alemdar neighbourhood of Fatih, in the historic heart of Istanbul, where staff welcome you and hand you single-use slippers, a towel and a traditional pestemal cloth. Men and women use separate sections of the bathhouse. The ritual starts in the warm room, giving your body time to get used to the rising temperature, and continues in the domed hot room, where you lie back on the heated marble platform known as the gobektasi and let the steam soften your skin, much like a sauna. An attendant then gives you a thorough kese scrub with a personal, single-use mitt, followed by a rich foam wash and massage. If you have chosen any of the optional treatments, such as a foot massage, an aromatherapy massage in a private room, a collagen mask or a full-body clay mask, they are carried out at this stage. Linden shampoo, hair cream, body lotion and pure olive oil soap are provided. The experience ends in the cool room, where you can relax for as long as you like with Turkish tea or home-made sherbet before returning to the city at your own pace.
