This daily Ihlara Valley hiking tour from Cappadocia is a full guided day tour into one of the greenest and most peaceful landscapes of central Anatolia. With hotel pick-up and drop-off, a riverside lunch and a choice of walking distances, this daily excursion combines an easy-paced canyon hike with cave churches and the vast rock-cut complex at Selime.
Ihlara Valley lies on the western edge of Cappadocia, in Aksaray province. Over thousands of years the Melendiz River cut a narrow canyon through layers of volcanic rock, creating sheer walls more than a hundred metres high and a ribbon of poplars, willows and orchards along the valley floor. From the Byzantine period onward, monks and hermits settled here, carving churches, chapels and dwellings into the cliffs. Many of these churches still preserve painted scenes from the Bible, making the gorge as rewarding for history lovers as it is for walkers.
Belisirma, roughly in the middle of the valley, is a small farming village where the trail meets the river, and it makes a natural break for lunch. At the northern end, Selime Monastery is a striking complex of halls, kitchens, chapels and living quarters cut into a single rock face; from its upper levels you look out over the whole valley. This Cappadocia day trip suits most fitness levels thanks to the flexible routes. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sun protection and water, and expect some uneven steps at the churches and at Selime.

Ihlara Valley, Belisirma & Selime Programme After pick-up from your hotel in Cappadocia, an air-conditioned vehicle takes you west to Ihlara Village, where the walk begins. Your English-speaking guide explains the three route options so you can choose the one that suits you: a 3.5 km stroll that starts at the main gate and ends in Belisirma Village, a 7 km trek from the start of the valley to Belisirma, or a full 14 km hike from the beginning of the canyon all the way to Selime Monastery. Whichever you pick, the path follows the Melendiz River beneath steep volcanic cliffs, passing cave churches decorated with Byzantine frescoes, old cave houses hidden in the rock, fruit orchards and several fine viewpoints. Around midway the group meets in Belisirma Village for a traditional Anatolian lunch at a restaurant beside the river. In the afternoon you visit Selime Monastery, the biggest monastic complex hewn from rock in the region, where the high terraces give a wide view over the valley and a clear picture of early Christian rock architecture. At the end of the day you are driven back to your hotel in Cappadocia.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
