From Istanbul
This Jewish heritage tour in Istanbul combines a guided walk through the historic Jewish quarter of Galata with the famous view from Pierre Loti Hill and a 90-minute cruise on the Bosphorus. This daily tour blends culture, faith and history with some of the finest scenery the city has to offer.
Arriving in Istanbul on a cruise ship? The Jewish Heritage Tour in Istanbul is one of the shore excursions we regularly arrange for cruise guests calling at the port of Istanbul. Because it runs as a private tour, we plan the timing around your ship: your guide and driver meet you at the cruise terminal, and the programme is adjusted to your all-aboard time. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Send us your ship name and the date of your call in Istanbul and we will confirm availability.
Jewish life in Istanbul goes back centuries. After the conquest of 1453, Sultan Mehmet II invited new settlers to repopulate the city, and in 1492 many Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal found refuge in the Ottoman capital. Many settled around Galata, on the northern shore of the Golden Horn, and in neighbourhoods such as Balat. Galata's winding lanes still hold synagogues, apartment buildings and the elegant curved staircase donated by the banker Abraham Camondo, a leading figure of the 19th-century Jewish community. The Jewish Museum tells the story of five centuries of coexistence.
Pierre Loti Hill, above Eyup, is named after the French novelist who loved to sit at a cafe here, and it offers one of the best views of the Golden Horn. The Bosphorus, the strait dividing Europe and Asia, is lined with Ottoman palaces, waterside mansions and fortresses, best admired from the deck of a boat. This daily excursion from Istanbul ends near the Spice Bazaar in Eminonu, followed by a transfer back to your hotel. Modest clothing is required in synagogues and comfortable shoes are recommended. Lunch at a local restaurant is at your own expense; transport and entrance fees in the programme are covered, making this Istanbul day trip an easy way to explore the city's multicultural past.

Galata Jewish Quarter, Pierre Loti & Bosphorus Programme The day opens in Galata, the lively quarter facing the old city across the Golden Horn, where Sephardic Jews settled after finding refuge in the Ottoman capital. With your English-speaking guide you stroll its colourful, winding streets to see synagogues, the Jewish Museum, historic Jewish apartment buildings and other heritage sites, and you hear the story of Count Abraham Camondo, the Constantinople-born banker of Venetian Jewish origin who funded the graceful public staircase that still bears his family name. At midday the group stops at a local restaurant for an authentic Turkish lunch (paid locally). Next you ride the cable car in Eyup up to Pierre Loti Hill, where the view over the Golden Horn is one of the most memorable in the city. From the hill you continue by coach along the Golden Horn towards the port, then board a boat for a 90-minute Bosphorus cruise between Europe and Asia, passing the marble facade of Dolmabahce Palace, mosques, bridges, palaces and fortresses while your guide explains each landmark. The cruise ends near the Spice Bazaar in Eminonu, and you are then taken back to your hotel.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
