My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
This daily Fener and Balat walking tour from Istanbul leads you away from the busy postcard sights into two old Golden Horn quarters where churches, mosques and synagogues stand only a few streets apart. It is a day tour for travellers who have already seen the famous domes and now want the layered, lived-in side of the city, explained by a licensed English-speaking guide.
Arriving in Istanbul on a cruise ship? The Fener & Balat Tour is one of the shore excursions we regularly arrange for cruise guests calling at the port of Istanbul. For cruise guests we can arrange pickup at the cruise terminal where the shared tour schedule allows; if your time in port is short, we recommend the private version of this tour, which is timed to your ship. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Send us your ship name and the date of your call in Istanbul and we will confirm availability.
Chora is famous for its Byzantine wall paintings, which tell biblical stories panel by panel. Nearby, the Anemas Dungeons take their name from Michael Anemas, a general who rose up against Alexios I Komnenos during the 1100s; later the cells held high-ranking captives, emperors among them. Blachernae was once among the most revered sanctuaries of the Byzantine capital because it sat beside the imperial palace and guarded an icon believed to protect the city in times of siege.
The walk continues past the Greek Orthodox church of St. Demetrius Kanabu, the exterior of the 16th-century Panaghia Balinu, the Ferruh Kethuda Mosque attributed to Mimar Sinan, and Surp Hirasdagabe, an Armenian church dating from the 1600s. The Ahrida Synagogue was founded by Jews from Ohrid, and its Teva recalls both Noah's Ark and the ships that carried Sephardic families from Spain. At the Patriarchate, the spiritual centre of Orthodox Christianity, admire the gilded wooden iconostasis of St. George.
As a daily excursion it involves a fair amount of walking on cobbled, sloping lanes, so wear comfortable shoes. Hotel pickup is included and entrance fees for the sites in the programme are covered; lunch is not included. This Balat day trip suits curious travellers aged 12 and over.

Fener & Balat Hidden Heritage Programme After pickup from your hotel, travel by air-conditioned vehicle to the western shore of the Golden Horn and meet the old neighbourhoods on foot. The walk opens at Chora, the Church of St. Savior, where your guide reads the 14th-century frescoes and mosaics with you scene by scene. Next come the Anemas Dungeons, once a Byzantine jail that bears the name of a 12th-century rebel general, and the site of Panaghia Blachernae, once one of the holiest shrines of the empire thanks to its miracle-working icon. Continue to the Atik Mustafa Mosque, also called Cabir Mosque, a cross-domed 9th-century church adapted by the Ottomans, and then to St. Demetrius Kanabu. Panaghia Balinu is viewed from outside, and the route passes the Ferruh Kethuda Mosque by Mimar Sinan and the Armenian church of Surp Hirasdagabe. Visit the Ahrida Synagogue with its ark-shaped Teva, then the Ecumenical Patriarchate and its Church of St. George with the gold-leaf iconostasis. The tour ends with the imposing Greek Lycee of Fener and St. Mary of the Mongols, a clover-plan Byzantine church that has stayed in Greek hands since about 1292. Lunch is at your own expense, after which you are transferred back to your hotel.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
