This Iznik day trip from Istanbul is a full daily tour to ancient Nicaea, the lakeside town where the First and Seventh Ecumenical Councils of the Christian Church were held and where the Ottoman world's most famous tiles were fired. Travelling with a licensed guide and lunch included, this daily excursion combines Roman walls, Byzantine churches, early Ottoman mosques and living craft traditions in one rewarding day tour.
Arriving in Istanbul on a cruise ship? The Iznik (Nicaea) Day Trip is one of the shore excursions we regularly arrange for cruise guests calling at the port of Istanbul. Because it runs as a private tour, we plan the timing around your ship: your guide and driver meet you at the cruise terminal, and the programme is adjusted to your all-aboard time. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Send us your ship name and the date of your call in Istanbul and we will confirm availability.
Nicaea was a leading city of Roman Bithynia and later an important Byzantine centre. Its circuit of walls, with monumental gateways such as the Istanbul and Lefke gates, still frames the old town and gives a vivid sense of its ancient defences. In the centre stands the Hagia Sophia of Iznik, a Byzantine basilica that hosted the council of 787 which ended the first period of Iconoclasm; under the Ottomans it became a mosque, and its walls preserve traces of both eras.
After the Ottoman conquest in 1331 Iznik flourished again. The Green Mosque, completed in the late 14th century, is admired for its fine marble work and the glazed tiles of its minaret. From the 15th to the 17th century local kilns produced the cobalt-blue and coral-red ceramics that decorate the great mosques and palaces of Istanbul; today small workshops keep this art alive, and you can watch the hand-painting process up close. The archaeological museum, when open, displays Roman sculpture and Ottoman ceramics.
Practical notes: the route crosses the Sea of Marmara by ferry, so departure and return times may shift slightly with ferry schedules. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The programme can be adapted to your interests and pace, making it suitable for families and history enthusiasts.

Iznik (Nicaea) Heritage Programme Your guide meets you in the lobby of your Istanbul hotel between 07:00 and 07:30, and an air-conditioned vehicle takes you to the ferry port for the crossing of the Sea of Marmara, followed by a scenic drive through green countryside to Iznik. The visit opens with a walk along the old city walls and their Roman gateways, where your guide explains how Romans and Byzantines defended this strategic town. Next is the Hagia Sophia of Iznik, the venue of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, whose fabric reveals its journey from Byzantine basilica to Ottoman mosque. You then continue to the Green Mosque, an elegant early Ottoman building famed for its turquoise-tiled minaret. Lunch is included during the day. If time and opening hours allow, you may add the Iznik Archaeological Museum with its Roman sculptures and historic ceramics. In the afternoon you step into a traditional ceramic workshop to meet craftsmen who still paint tiles by hand, then relax at the shore of Lake Iznik for photographs. The journey back to Istanbul brings you to your hotel at around 19:30 to 20:00.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
