This daily Sardis and Philadelphia tour from Cesme leads you inland to two cities that shaped the story of western Anatolia: Sardis, the royal seat of the Lydian kings, and Philadelphia, today's Alasehir. Both are counted among the Seven Churches of Asia named in the Book of Revelation, which makes this day tour equally rewarding for history enthusiasts and travellers following early Christian sites.
Holidaying on Chios? The Sardis & Philadelphia Tour is an easy day trip from the Greek islands: take the morning ferry to Çeşme, join the tour, and sail back in the evening (from Chios the ferry takes 20 minutes). We meet you at the Çeşme ferry port with your private guide and vehicle and time the programme to the ferry schedule. For longer itineraries we check the ferry timetable first and confirm that the full programme fits your day. Please bring your passport and check the Turkish entry requirements for your nationality before travelling.
Sardis, modern Sart, was the capital of Lydia in the 6th century BC, the realm of the fabulously rich King Croesus and a cradle of early coinage. Its wealth came partly from the Pactolus stream, whose sands once carried gold. After the Persian conquest, Cyrus the Great linked the city to Susa with the famous Royal Road, and you will see its last few metres here. Later centuries added the grand gymnasium complex and one of the largest ancient synagogues ever found, both carefully restored.
Philadelphia was the only one of the seven churches that Revelation did not reproach. Little of the old city survives inside modern Alasehir, but the tall brick piers and arch of its Byzantine basilica still stand, with faint traces of 11th-century wall paintings.
The guided daily excursion includes hotel pickup and return in Cesme, a lunch stop on the way and entrance fees for the sites listed. The pace is relaxed and the tour is suited to guests aged 11 and over.

Sardis & Philadelphia Programme After a morning pickup from your hotel in Cesme, you travel east through the countryside of Izmir and Manisa, with olive groves and vineyards lining much of the route. The first destination is Sardis, the present-day village of Sart, once the capital of the Lydian kingdom and later one of the Seven Churches of Asia. With your English-speaking guide you explore the vast sanctuary of Artemis, then the shrine of Cybele that Byzantine Christians later turned into a church, before moving on to the restored gymnasium and the reconstructed synagogue that stands beside it. You will also see the final few metres of the Royal Road that Cyrus the Great built to connect Susa with Sardis, as well as the Pactolus, the river famed in antiquity for its gold. Lunch is served along the way. In the afternoon the journey continues to Philadelphia, today called Alasehir, another of the seven churches and the only one that escaped criticism in Revelation. Here you visit the remains of a brick Byzantine basilica with its surviving high arch and fragments of 11th-century frescoes. At the end of the visit you are driven back to Cesme and dropped off at your hotel.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
