This daily Sardis, Kula and Ulubey Canyon tour from Cesme travels inland from the coast into the old kingdom of Lydia and the volcanic landscapes beyond it. In one long day tour with an English-speaking guide and hotel pick-up in Cesme, you combine a famous ancient capital, a well-preserved Ottoman town, a geopark of extinct volcanoes and a deep canyon seen from a glass terrace.
The Sardis, Kula Fairy Chimneys & Ulubey Canyon Tour is also arranged for visitors coming over from Chios for the day. Catch the early ferry to Çeşme (from Chios the ferry takes 20 minutes) and you will be back on the island the same evening. Our team welcomes you at the Çeşme ferry port and makes sure the day ends in time for your return crossing. For longer itineraries we check the ferry timetable first and confirm that the full programme fits your day. Please bring your passport and check the Turkish entry requirements for your nationality before travelling.
Sardis was the capital of the Lydians, the people credited with minting the first coins in history, and later an important Roman and Byzantine city. Its synagogue is one of the largest ancient synagogues ever discovered, and the marble court of the neighbouring bath-gymnasium has been partly rebuilt to its original height. Beside them lie a row of Roman shops and public latrines, while excavated paving marks the Royal Road that once linked Sardis with the Persian capital. The mounds of Bintepeler, whose name means a thousand hills, cover the tombs of the Lydian rulers.
Kula keeps an exceptional collection of 18th and 19th century Ottoman houses with carved wooden details. Around it, the Kula-Salihli area is recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark for its dozens of young volcanic cones, lava fields and fairy chimneys that recall a miniature Cappadocia. The final stop, Ulubey Canyon near Usak, is among the longest canyon systems in the world. Lunch is not included in this daily excursion; there is a lunch stop in Kula at your own expense. This Sardis day trip involves moderate walking and makes a long daily tour of around ten hours, so bring comfortable shoes.

Sardis, Kula & Ulubey Canyon Programme After pick-up from your hotel in Cesme, the bus heads east towards Salihli. On the way you pass the Bintepeler area, where the burial mounds of the Lydian kings rise from the plain, and your guide explains their story from the vehicle. The first visit is ancient Sardis, capital of the Lydians: you explore the great synagogue and the Roman bath-gymnasium, the row of ancient shops and latrines beside them, and the excavated section of the historic Royal Road. The tour then continues to Kula, where you stroll through the old streets to see Kursunlu Mosque, the old bazaar and the finely built Kula Houses of the Ottoman period, followed by a visit to a historic house and the hammam cafe and a lunch break at your own expense. In the afternoon you enter the Kula Geopark with its volcanic peaks and stop at the Kula fairy chimneys, where the guide describes how these rock formations took shape before you take photos. The last visit is Ulubey Canyon in the province of Usak, admired from a glass viewing terrace 150 metres above the valley floor. Afterwards you drive back to Cesme and are dropped off at your hotel.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
