The Bafa Lake day tour from Kusadasi leads you to one of the most atmospheric landscapes of the Aegean, where a former sea gulf, a rugged mountain and the remains of an ancient harbour town meet. This guided daily excursion combines nature, history and mythology in a single relaxed outing, with lunch and hotel transfers taken care of.
Arriving in Kuşadası on a cruise ship? The Bafa Lake Tour is one of the shore excursions we regularly arrange for cruise guests calling at the port of Kuşadası. Because it runs as a private tour, we plan the timing around your ship: your guide and driver meet you at the cruise terminal, and the programme is adjusted to your all-aboard time. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Send us your ship name and the date of your call in Kuşadası and we will confirm availability.
Holidaying on Samos or Patmos? The Bafa Lake Tour is an easy day trip from the Greek islands: take the morning ferry to Kuşadası, join the tour, and sail back in the evening (from Samos the ferry takes 45 minutes; from Patmos the ferry takes about 3 hours). We meet you at the Kuşadası ferry port with your private guide and vehicle and time the programme to the ferry schedule. For longer itineraries we check the ferry timetable first and confirm that the full programme fits your day. Please bring your passport and check the Turkish entry requirements for your nationality before travelling.
Until Roman times Bafa was not a lake at all but the tip of a sea gulf. Over centuries the River Meander carried huge amounts of silt to its mouth, and by around 400 AD the connection with the open sea was closed. What remains today is a lake about 15 km long and 10 km wide, reaching some 25 m in depth. Its water is mostly fresh, though part of it is still salty, and it supports sea bass, eels and carp. Olive groves, cotton fields and beehives line the shores, giving this Bafa Lake day trip a strongly rural character.
Herakleia, also known as Latmos, grew up as a port at the foot of the mountain and lived from farming, fishing and maritime trade. When the silt cut its harbour off from the sea, the city slowly declined. The strange rock formations of Mount Latmos explain why so many legends were born here: the most famous tells how Selene, goddess of the moon, put the handsome Endymion into eternal sleep so she could visit him each night. The mountain kept its sacred aura into the Byzantine era. This daily tour runs with an English-speaking guide; bring comfortable shoes and a camera for the birdlife.

Bafa Lake & Herakleia Programme In the morning your English-speaking guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in Kusadasi, and the group sets off south in an air-conditioned vehicle towards Bafa Lake on the border of Aydin and Mugla. On arrival the guide explains how this broad lake was once the inner end of a sea gulf, cut off from the Aegean around 400 AD by the silt of the River Meander. You take in views across the water, where pelicans, storks and many other of the lake's more than two hundred bird species can be spotted, and see the olive groves, cotton fields and beehives that shape life along the shore. The tour continues to Herakleia, the ancient harbour town on the slopes of Mount Latmos, where the guide brings its story of trade, fishing and slow decline to life, and recounts the myth of Selene, goddess of the moon, and the sleeping Endymion. Lunch is included during the day. In the late afternoon you travel back to Kusadasi and are dropped off at your hotel.

It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
