A Safranbolu day trip from Ankara is the easiest way to experience the best-preserved Ottoman town in Turkey, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its streets of timber-framed mansions, historic inns and lively craft bazaar. This guided day tour lets you walk through living history, taste local cooking and enjoy wide views over a sea of red-tiled roofs.
Safranbolu owes its name and early wealth to saffron, once grown in the surrounding fields, and to its position on caravan routes linking the Black Sea with inner Anatolia. Prosperous families built large wooden houses with separate rooms for men and women, built-in cupboards and inner courtyards; Kaymakamlar House, now a museum, shows how these homes worked. Cinci Han, completed in the 1640s, is one of the finest surviving caravanserais in the region, while the hilltop Clock Tower dates from the late 18th century. From Hıdırlık Hill the whole valley of mansions spreads out below you.
This daily excursion is guided by a licensed English-speaking guide and includes hotel pick-up and drop-off in central Ankara, return transport, lunch, parking fees and entrance to the historical sites in the programme. The drive takes about three hours each way. Walking is moderate on cobbled lanes, so comfortable shoes are essential; spring and autumn bring the most pleasant weather. Bathing at the Turkish bath is optional and not included.

Safranbolu Old Town Programme Your guide meets you at your centrally located Ankara hotel at 06:30, and the vehicle heads north on a drive of about three hours, with a short rest stop on the way. On arrival in Safranbolu at around 09:30 you receive a short briefing before setting off on foot through the old town, a remarkable open-air museum of Ottoman domestic architecture. At 10:00 you visit Cinci Han, the monumental caravanserai that once served traders on the routes through the region, and see the traditional design of the nearby bathhouse. From 11:00 there is time to wander the Old Bazaar, where artisans sell copperware, carved wood, textiles and saffron treats made only in this area. Around 12:30 you step inside Kaymakamlar House, a restored mansion museum that recreates the everyday life of an Ottoman household. Lunch follows at 13:30 in a local restaurant, with regional dishes such as saffron rice, gözleme or meat-filled vine leaves. At 14:30 you climb to Hıdırlık Hill for the famous view over the rooftops and visit the Clock Tower, learning about its historic mechanism. From 15:30 you have free time for coffee in an old coffee house, shopping or photography. The group leaves at 16:30 and you are dropped at your Ankara hotel at about 19:30.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
