This daily Sardes and Philadelphia tour from Izmir follows the footsteps of early Christianity inland to two of the Seven Churches of Asia named in the Book of Revelation. In one rewarding day you walk through the former capital of the Lydian kingdom and then stand beneath the soaring arches of a Byzantine basilica in Philadelphia, today the town of Alasehir. Archaeology, biblical history and the gentle landscapes of the Gediz valley come together in a single, well-paced daily tour that suits history lovers and pilgrims alike.
This Sardes & Philadelphia Tour also works as a shore excursion from the İzmir cruise port — a popular choice for passengers who have one day ashore. As a private excursion it is fully flexible — pickup is right at the pier, the pace follows your group, and we make sure you are back on board well before departure. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Simply share your cruise itinerary and the date you are in İzmir, and we will reserve your places.
Sardes was the seat of the Lydian kings, and its wealth was proverbial: the little Pactolus stream that runs past the site was said to carry gold, a story linked to King Midas and to Croesus, whose realm is credited with some of the earliest coinage. Under later empires the city stayed important, and the large bath-gymnasium complex with its elegant marble court, together with one of the largest ancient synagogues ever discovered, shows how varied its community once was. The Temple of Artemis, with its massive columns, ranks among the most impressive Ionic temples in Anatolia, and the city also stood at the western end of the Royal Road used by Persian messengers.
Philadelphia, modern Alasehir, holds a special place among the Seven Churches because Revelation addresses it with praise alone and no reproach. The surviving piers of its Byzantine basilica still carry traces of medieval frescoes. This daily excursion includes hotel pickup and return in Izmir, a local lunch and all entrance fees, making it an easy Sardes day trip for travellers interested in faith and history. The minimum age for this tour is 11.

Sardes & Philadelphia Programme The day begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Izmir, and you travel inland in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle to Sardes, today called Sart. Once the royal seat of the Lydians, it is also counted among the Seven Churches of Asia. With your English-speaking guide you explore the monumental Temple of Artemis, dedicated to one of the most revered goddesses of antiquity, and the neighbouring Temple of Cybele, a pagan shrine that the Byzantines later turned into a place of Christian worship. You then see the carefully restored gymnasium and the rebuilt synagogue, two monuments that reveal the mixed population of this prosperous city. Next comes a walk along surviving stretches of the Persian Royal Road, which once ran all the way from Susa to Sardes, and a stop at the Pactolus River, the stream whose golden sands inspired famous legends. After a relaxed local lunch you continue to Philadelphia, present-day Alasehir, the one church of the seven that Revelation praised without any rebuke. Here you stand among what survives of a Byzantine basilica, admiring its tall arches and well-preserved 11th-century frescoes. When the visit is over, you are driven back and dropped at your hotel in Izmir.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
