Cappadocia's soft volcanic tuff was easy to carve, and for centuries local people dug entire settlements beneath the ground where families could hide from invaders. Ozkonak reveals this hidden world through narrow passages, ventilation shafts and storage rooms spread over several levels. Nearby Cavusin preserves elegant stone houses built by the Greek community that lived here for generations. The highlight of this daily excursion is the Goreme Open-Air Museum, a monastic complex that became an important centre of early Christianity; its chapels, cut directly into the rock, still hold colourful frescoes and are protected as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the afternoon the views take over. Esentepe offers a sweeping panorama across the valleys and is ideal for photos, while in Devrent Valley, often called Imagination Valley, wind and rain have sculpted the rock into shapes that resemble camels, dolphins and other animals. The Three Beauties, a family of capped fairy chimneys, are a symbol of the whole region. Along the way you also visit a ceramic workshop, where you can try the potter's wheel, and a carpet weaving centre.
