The hamam has been part of daily life in Anatolia for more than six centuries. Inherited from Roman and Byzantine bathing culture and refined in the Ottoman era, it was a place to get clean, to rest and to meet friends, and a visit was often part of weddings and other family celebrations. A classic hamam is built around a domed hot room with a raised marble platform at its centre, called the gobek tasi, where guests lie in the warmth while the attendant works. The kese mitt removes dead skin far more effectively than an ordinary wash, and the foam massage that follows is famously soothing.

On arrival you are given a pestemal, the thin cotton waistcloth, and wooden clogs to wear inside. Temperatures in the hot room can reach around 50°C, so drink water beforehand and tell the staff if you prefer a lighter scrub.
