Oludeniz, the "Dead Sea" of Turkey, owes its name to the calm, protected water of its lagoon, framed by pine-covered hills and the peak of Babadag. St. Nicholas Island, or Gemiler Adasi, holds the remains of several Byzantine churches linked by a covered processional way, and many believe it was associated with Saint Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop of nearby Myra. Butterfly Valley is a protected nature area where a narrow gorge, a small waterfall and lush vegetation shelter dozens of butterfly species, including the Jersey tiger moth in summer.
