From Kars
Explore the remote and hauntingly beautiful far north-east of Turkey on this Kars daily tour, a full private day trip that reaches the medieval ghost city of Ani and the frozen expanses of Lake Cildir. Once a great crossroads of the Silk Road, Kars is a city of grand stone buildings, a hilltop castle and a landscape of high steppe that turns white and magical in winter. This daily excursion from Kars brings together the ruined "City of 1,001 Churches" on the Armenian border, the ancient churches and mosques of the city itself, and the celebrated winter sleigh rides on Lake Cildir — a day trip unlike any other in Turkey.
The day's great prize is Ani, spread across a windswept plateau right on the border with Armenia. Capital of the Bagratid Armenian kingdom in the 10th and 11th centuries, it was a flourishing city of churches, cathedrals and markets before earthquakes and shifting trade routes left it abandoned. Today its reddish and black volcanic stone monuments rise dramatically from the grass — the Great Cathedral, the round Church of the Redeemer, the frescoed Church of St Gregory, the city walls and the Lion Gate — gazing across the Arpacay gorge that marks the frontier. In winter, snow transforms the whole site into one of the most atmospheric places in the country.
Back toward the city, this Kars day trip continues to Lake Cildir, a vast high-altitude lake that freezes solid in winter, where you can enjoy a traditional horse-drawn sleigh ride across the ice and see how local fishermen cut through to fish beneath. In Kars itself you visit the Church of the Apostles (now the Kumbet Mosque), climb to Kars Castle for views over the rooftops, and see the much-loved "Lovers' House". Operated as a private tour with your own English-speaking guide and vehicle, this full-day Kars excursion is the ideal way to experience the history and wild scenery of Turkey's north-eastern frontier in a single day.

Kars Day Tour Programme After breakfast and pick-up from your hotel, the first stop of the day is Ani, the city known as the "City of 1,001 Churches" and once the capital of the Armenian kingdom. Set on a plateau beside the Arpacay river on the border with Armenia, its churches and cathedrals of coloured volcanic stone are spectacular in every season and especially striking under snow. With your guide you visit the principal monuments — among them the Church of St Gregory (the frescoed church), the Church of the Redeemer, the Great Cathedral (Fethiye Mosque), the city walls, the Lion Gate and the Menucehr Mosque — and view the Seljuk Palace from the outside. From Ani the tour moves on to Lake Cildir, where you stop for lunch before enjoying the lake; in winter this is the setting for traditional horse-drawn sleigh rides across the ice and for watching the local ice-fishing. Afterwards you head to the centre of Kars, where you visit the Church of the Apostles (the Kumbet Mosque) and climb up to Kars Castle, the Ottoman citadel overlooking the city. The day is completed with a visit to the well-known "Lovers' House" before you are returned to your hotel.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
