Travel from the Black Sea coast to the plains of Mesopotamia on this eight-day scheduled group tour of Türkiye's wild and little-visited east, planned in-house by Inca Tour, a TURSAB-licensed operator, and guided in English throughout. You begin in Trabzon, where the Byzantine Hagia Sophia keeps its thirteenth-century frescoes and the tea gardens of Boztepe look out over the city. A highlight is the Sumela Monastery, clinging to a sheer cliff above the forested Altındere Valley National Park, before the road climbs through the Zigana Mountains and past the Karaca Cave to Erzurum, the great city of the eastern plateau with its Seljuk double-minaret madrasa.
Crossing a landscape of high steppe and distant peaks, you reach the haunting ruins of Ani near Kars — the medieval capital of Armenia, its cathedrals and churches standing alone on a grassy plateau at the modern border. Further east, the perfect cone of Mount Ararat dominates the horizon above Doğubeyazıt, where the eighteenth-century İshak Paşa Palace, part mosque, part fortress and part palace, surveys the plain below alongside the ruins of old Bayazıt and an earlier Urartian citadel.
The tour turns south-west to the shores of Lake Van, Türkiye's largest lake, where a short boat ride reaches Akdamar Island and its exquisite tenth-century Church of the Holy Cross, carved with Biblical scenes. You visit the Urartian fortress of Hoşap Castle and the citadel of Van before travelling on through Ahlat, with its field of Seljuk tombstones, and the medieval town of Bitlis to Diyarbakır. There the monumental black basalt city walls rise above the Tigris, a fitting finale to a journey across the length of eastern Anatolia. With seven nights' accommodation, daily breakfast, six dinners, a private air-conditioned coach and a professional guide, this is a genuine expedition into Türkiye's most dramatic and historic frontier. Prices are per person.

Overnight in Erzurum.
Leaving early through Sarıkamış, you travel across the high plateau to the ruins of Ani, the medieval Armenian capital on the Turkish-Armenian border. With your guide you walk among its cathedrals, churches and fortifications, with views across the Arpaçay gorge toward Armenia, before continuing to the frontier city of Kars. Overnight in Kars.
Today you drive along a historic Silk Road route toward the Iranian border, with views of Mount Ararat, Türkiye's highest peak, from several angles. You visit the magnificent eighteenth-century İshak Paşa Palace, a complex of mosque, fortress and palace overlooking the plain, and the ruins of old Bayazıt and an earlier Urartian citadel. Overnight in Doğubeyazıt.
After a morning near the border you drive to the shores of Lake Van, the largest lake in Türkiye. A short boat trip reaches Akdamar Island and its beautifully carved tenth-century Church of the Holy Cross. You also visit the Urartian fortress of Hoşap Castle near the Iranian frontier. Overnight in Van.
Travelling west, you stop at the field of Seljuk tombstones in Ahlat on the lake shore, then continue to the atmospheric medieval town of Bitlis set in its river gorge, where you enjoy lunch and a short walking tour. My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
