This daily Sumela tour from Trabzon combines the cliffside Sumela Monastery with Zigana Mountain, Hamsikoy and Karaca Cave. The Torul Glass Terrace is also on the route, all in one well-paced group day. Departing Trabzon at 09:30 and returning in the early evening, it covers the classic highlights of the eastern Black Sea interior with comfortable transport and a group leader.
Sumela, popularly called the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, clings to a sheer rock face about 300 metres above the Altindere Valley in the Macka district. Legend says it was founded in the late 4th century by two monks from Athens, Barnabas and Sophronios, and enlarged in the 6th century by Belisarius on the orders of Emperor Justinian; its name is thought to derive from melas, meaning black. After walking up the forest path to the monastery you drive to around 1,700 metres on Zigana Mountain for a lunch break in a woodland restaurant, then reach Hamsikoy, an old caravan stop on the northern Silk Road route whose name means five villages. Here you taste the famous Hamsikoy rice pudding, slow-cooked for about an hour from local milk, rice, sugar and salt.
The afternoon takes you through the 14.5 km Zigana Tunnel, one of the longest double-tube road tunnels in the world, to the Glass Terrace in the Torul district of Gumushane and on to Karaca Cave, 1,550 metres above sea level, whose dripstone formations and clean air are said to ease asthma. A final stop for pestil and kome, the local fruit-leather and walnut sweets, completes this day tour from Trabzon, with arrival back between 18:00 and 19:00. It is an easy, value-focused daily excursion from Trabzon for families and first-time visitors to the region.

Sumela Programme The tour leaves Trabzon at 09:30, collecting guests along the route before heading south into the mountains of the Macka district. At the Altindere Valley you switch to local minibuses that take you to the start of the footpath, then walk up through the forest to the Sumela Monastery, built into a cliff high above the valley and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After exploring the rock-cut chapels and frescoes, you walk back down to the minibuses and rejoin the main vehicle. The road then climbs to about 1,700 metres on Zigana Mountain, where you stop for lunch at a restaurant in the forest (at your own expense). Next comes Hamsikoy, a historic stopover on the northern branch of the Silk Road, where you sample the famous Hamsikoy rice pudding and enjoy views over the village. The route continues through the 14.5 km Zigana Tunnel, one of the longest double-tube tunnels in the world, to the Glass Terrace in Torul, Gumushane, overlooking the valley. The last visit is Karaca Cave, admired for its stalactites and stalagmites and its healthy microclimate, followed by a stop at a shop selling pestil and kome, the fruit-pulp and nut sweets of the region. You arrive back in Trabzon between 18:00 and 19:00, depending on season and traffic.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
