Troy, known in Turkish as Truva, sits on the Hisarlik mound a short drive from the city of Canakkale. Over roughly 5,000 years the city was burned or levelled no fewer than nine times, and each time new inhabitants built on top of the ruins of the old. The result is a layered site where walls, gates and ramps from different eras stand side by side. The twentieth anniversary of its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List was celebrated in 2018, when Turkey declared the Year of Troia.
The visit begins at the large Wooden Horse, a symbol of the legendary ruse that ended the ten-year siege, before your guide leads you along the paths of the excavations. You will hear how the Trojans lived, how the war described by Homer is reflected in the ruins, and why this mound has fascinated travellers and archaeologists for centuries. Comfortable shoes, a hat and water are recommended, as the site is largely open to the sun.

Troy Ancient City Programme After breakfast at your hotel in Canakkale, our team collects you and you travel in a comfortable air-conditioned coach to Troy Ancient City, the legendary setting of the war between the Achaeans and the Trojans. On arrival your first stop is the famous Wooden Horse at the entrance, a perfect place for photographs and for your guide to set the scene of Homer's epic. You then walk through the archaeological site, where the remains of a city that was destroyed by fire and war nine times and rebuilt on the very same spot reveal some 5,000 years of continuous history. Along the way your guide explains the different layers of settlement, the defensive walls and gates, the daily life of the Trojan people and the long siege that has become one of the best-known stories of the ancient world. You will also learn why Troy was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List and why 2018 was celebrated as the Year of Troia in Turkey. After the guided visit you return to the coach and are driven back to your hotel in Canakkale, where the tour comes to an end.
