Assos Archaeological Site

The ancient city of Assos was founded in the 6th century BC and is located on an extinct volcanic hill. The city was constructed using andesite stone, which is difficult to process but extremely durable. Assos was known for its sarcophagi, which were famous in the ancient world for their ability to quickly decompose the body inside. These sarcophagi were referred to as 'man-eating sarcophagi' and were exported to various regions of Anatolia. Assos is a city where the philosopher Aristotle once lived and founded a school of philosophy. The Temple of Athena, named after the daughter of Zeus and one of the 12 Olympian gods who is also the patron goddess of the city, is located at the highest point of the city. It is the first and only Doric temple built in Anatolia and is notable for its extraordinary view. Assos features several historical sites from the Roman period, including an ancient theatre, agora, Necropolis, and city walls.
