Apollon Smintheion Archaeological Site

The Sanctuary of Smintheion is located in the southwest of the Troad Region, at the westernmost tip of the Asian continent. The sanctuary is known for the Temple of Apollo Smintheus and was one of the most important sanctuaries of the Late Hellenistic Period in Anatolia. The temple was dedicated to Apollo, called 'Smintheus' (meaning 'lord of mice') due to regional associations with rodents. The structure showcases the Ionian architectural style with a pseudodipteral design that is unique to the Troas region. Architect Hermogenes is thought to have designed it circa 150 B.C. Beyond the primary temple, the sanctuary contains an altar for sacrifices, a visitor bridge, sacred pathways, Roman bathing facilities with water infrastructure, decorated streets with statuary and inscriptions, a heroon (hero shrine), and residential villas.
