Alexandria Troas Archaeological Site

Alexandria Troas is situated in the Kestanbolluk area within the borders of the Ezine district's Dalyan village. The city was founded in 310 B.C. as 'Antigonia' by Antigonos Monophtalmos, one of the commanders of Alexander the Great. After Alexander's death, Lysimachus changed the city's name to 'Alexandria Troas', meaning 'Alexander's city in Troas'. Alexandria Troas was a significant city in Anatolia, featuring carefully planned temples, small baths, a stadium, a fountain, a stone-paved street, a theatre, a trench, and a port. One of the remaining buildings is the 'Herodes Atticus Gymnasium', one of the largest gymnasiums in Anatolia. The city covers an area of 390 hectares and has 8 km of walls. Excavations are still being carried out by Prof. Dr. Erhan Öztepe's team from Ankara University.
