Known in antiquity as Tenedos, Bozcaada sits close to the mouth of the Dardanelles, a position that made it valuable to every power in the region for thousands of years. That long history survives in its two old neighbourhoods: whitewashed Greek houses with wooden balconies on one side, Ottoman Turkish homes and mosques on the other. The castle, rebuilt by the Ottomans on earlier Byzantine and Venetian foundations, guards the harbour, while the Koprulu Mehmet Pasa Mosque and the Alaybey Mosque reflect the island's Ottoman period. The Aya Paraskevi Monastery is a reminder of its Orthodox community.
The island is equally famous for its vineyards and winemaking tradition, which you can sample during the winery visits, subject to seasonal opening hours. Ayazma Beach on the south coast offers clear turquoise water and soft sand. This Bozcaada day trip lasts about 10 to 12 hours including transfers and ferries; lunch is not included, so carry some cash, plus swimwear, a towel, sun protection and comfortable shoes for the cobbled streets. Bozcaada Island Programme Following breakfast at your hotel, you are collected in Ayvalik and driven north to Geyikli Port, where the ferry carries you across to Bozcaada. On arrival your guide introduces the island's history, culture and distinctive architecture during a walk through both the historic Greek quarter and the Turkish quarter. The tour then calls at some of the island's well-known wineries, where you can learn about local winemaking and enjoy a tasting, followed by free time to browse the shops for regional products and souvenirs. Next comes a long break of roughly three hours at Ayazma Beach, ideal for swimming, sunbathing and a lunch of your choice at one of the beachfront restaurants (at your own expense). In the afternoon the sightseeing continues with Bozcaada Castle, the Alaybey Mosque, the Aya Paraskevi Monastery and the Koprulu Mehmet Pasa Mosque, each telling part of the island's multicultural story. Once the island tour is complete you take the ferry back to Geyikli and are transferred to your hotel in Ayvalik, with the day finishing between 17:00 and 18:00.
