Capital of the Anatolian Seljuks in the 12th and 13th centuries and home of Rumi, the beloved Sufi poet, it combines sacred architecture, Seljuk monuments and a proud culinary tradition. Over six days and five nights you will see the city from several angles: its spiritual heart, its medieval sultanate, the lake country to the southwest, its kitchens and its bath houses. Your first excursion pairs the city centre with the Beysehir region. At the Mevlana Museum you enter Rumi's tomb and the lodge of the Mevlevi order, including the dervish kitchen, the recitation chamber and the semahane hall, before visiting the neighbouring Selimiye Mosque, completed in 1567. In the afternoon you reach Beysehir Lake, a national park of islets and waterbirds, where the wooden Esrefoglu Mosque of 1299 and the Hittite spring shrine of Eflatun Pinari reveal very different layers of Anatolian history. A later day returns to the old town for a dedicated Mevlana tour: a second, quieter visit to the tomb, the Ottoman Sultan Selim mosque and then Alaeddin Hill, a prehistoric mound crowned by the Alaeddin Mosque, where several Seljuk sultans are buried. Walking down the hill you pass the remains of the Seljuk palace and view the richly carved portal of the Ince Minareli Medrese.
Between the sightseeing days come two unhurried experiences. With a restaurant chef you learn and cook local Konya dishes, salads and desserts, then eat them for lunch, and in a traditional hamam you move through the warm and hot rooms and enjoy a classic scrub. Continue to Alaeddin Hill, a prehistoric tumulus, to see the thousand-year-old Alaeddin Mosque and the tombs of Seljuk sultans in its courtyard. Descending the north side, pass the ruins of the Seljuk palace and cross the road to admire the ornate portal of the Ince Minareli Medrese. Overnight in Konya.
