Maiden's Tower

Few landmarks capture the romance of Istanbul like the Maiden's Tower. Standing alone on a small rock in the Bosphorus, a few hundred metres off the Salacak shore of Üsküdar, it has watched over the meeting point of the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara for centuries. Known in Turkish as Kız Kulesi and in older European accounts as Leander's Tower, it reopened to visitors in 2023 as a museum after a careful restoration.

History

The islet has been fortified since antiquity. In the twelfth century the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos built a tower here, and a chain is said to have been stretched across the water to control shipping. Under the Ottomans the tower served as a watchtower and lighthouse. It was rebuilt several times after fires and earthquakes; after a fire in 1721 it was reconstructed in stone, and in 1832 Sultan Mahmud II restored it, giving it much of its present appearance, with a marble inscription recording the work. Over the years it also served as a quarantine station, a radio station and, in the late twentieth century, a café and restaurant. The tower appeared in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999).

Legends

The most famous story tells of a sultan whose daughter was prophesied to die from a snake bite before her eighteenth birthday. To protect her, he locked her in the tower, but a snake hidden in a basket of fruit fulfilled the prophecy. The Western name recalls the Greek myth of Hero and Leander, the lover who swam the Hellespont each night, a tale later transplanted to the Bosphorus.

Visitor Tips

Access is by boat only. According to the official website, boats leave from the visitor centre at Salacak in Üsküdar and from the pier in front of the Ziraat Bank in Karaköy; departure points can change, so check before you go. The museum ticket includes an audio guide, and holders of the Museum Pass Türkiye pay only the transfer fee. Sunset is the most popular time, when the silhouette of the old city glows across the water.
