Lake Bafa was once the innermost tip of the Latmian Gulf. Over centuries the Meander River carried so much silt into the bay that, by around 400 AD, the water was cut off from the open sea and became a lake. Today it stretches roughly 15 km by 10 km and reaches a depth of about 25 metres. Sea bass, eels and carp live in its waters, and the reed beds and rocky shores attract a remarkable variety of birds, which makes this daily excursion a pleasure for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Herakleia, formerly called Latmos, grew at the base of Mount Latmos (1,375 m) and lived from farming, fishing and seaborne trade. When the river silted up the gulf and the harbour lost its link to the sea, the town slowly declined. The dramatic setting inspired ancient storytellers: here the moon goddess Selene is said to have cast the shepherd Endymion into eternal sleep so she could visit him by night.
