From Istanbul
This guided Istanbul Archaeology Museums walking tour spends a full morning inside one of the world's great museum complexes, following a fixed timetable through all three of its buildings with a professional English-speaking guide. Starting at 09:30 at the museum entrance, close to Topkapi Palace and Gulhane Park, it is an ideal half-day activity in Istanbul for anyone curious about the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Ottoman worlds.
Arriving in Istanbul on a cruise ship? The Istanbul Archaeology Museums Walking Tour is one of the shore excursions we regularly arrange for cruise guests calling at the port of Istanbul. Because it runs as a private tour, we plan the timing around your ship: your guide and driver meet you at the cruise terminal, and the programme is adjusted to your all-aboard time. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Send us your ship name and the date of your call in Istanbul and we will confirm availability.
The visit opens in the neo-classical Main Building, designed by the architect Alexandre Vallaury and opened in 1902, which holds an extraordinary collection of more than one million objects. Here you stand before the celebrated Alexander Sarcophagus, carved with battle and hunting scenes and counted among the most remarkable archaeological finds of its era. Upstairs, the Ottoman coin collection displays over 800,000 historical coins and explains how money worked in the empire and in the civilisations that came before it.
The tour continues in the New Building, where the galleries on Troy and the ancient cultures of Anatolia, together with a carefully curated section on Istanbul through the ages, reveal the layers of the city's past. The final stop is the Museum of the Ancient Orient, housed in the former School of Fine Arts founded by Osman Hamdi Bey, with Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Hittite treasures and the famous Kadesh Treaty, the earliest known peace agreement, written in cuneiform on a clay tablet. Half an hour of free time at the end lets you revisit favourite rooms, ask your guide questions or browse the museum shop. Please note this is a walking tour with a meeting point at the museum, so hotel transfers are not part of the programme.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
