Chora Museum

The Chora Church, known in Turkish as Kariye Müzesi or Kariye Camii, stands as one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture. Located in the Edirnekapı district of western Istanbul, this structure was originally built as an Orthodox church and later converted into a mosque by Ottoman rulers in the 16th century. The building now functions primarily as a mosque while serving as a museum for visitors.

The interior showcases exceptional Byzantine artistry, with walls and ceilings adorned with intricate mosaics and frescoes dating primarily to the 14th century. These detailed works depict biblical scenes, particularly from the lives of Christ and Mary, including notably one of the earliest known painted depictions of the Resurrection. Following recent restoration efforts, these artistic treasures have been meticulously preserved.

Visitors should be aware that as an active place of worship, the site observes prayer times and requires appropriate dress codes. General visiting hours run from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily except Tuesdays. The location, while somewhat removed from central Istanbul's main tourist areas, remains accessible via public transportation and lies near the Theodosian Walls.
