Morning Food Walk from the Spice Bazaar to Kadikoy on the Asian Side

This Spice Bazaar and Kadikoy food tour is a relaxed morning walk that tastes Istanbul on two continents. It starts among the sacks of spices and trays of Turkish delight in the old city, carries on with a proper Turkish breakfast and then crosses the Bosphorus by public ferry to Kadikoy, the lively market district on the Asian shore where locals do their daily shopping. Groups are kept small, with no more than ten guests, so everyone fits around the table and the guide has time for your questions.

  • Spice Bazaar: the 17th-century Misir Carsisi with tastings of Turkish delight, dried fruit and spices
  • Turkish breakfast: cheeses, olives, honey and clotted cream, eggs, fresh bread and endless tea
  • Public ferry: a short Bosphorus crossing from Europe to Asia with views of the historic skyline
  • Kadikoy market streets: family-run delis, pickle shops, fishmongers and bakeries
  • About eight eateries: street snacks, stuffed mussels, a kebab dish, baklava and Turkish ice cream
  • Local drinks: four to five tastings such as tea, ayran, salep or sherbet, and a Turkish coffee

Why Taste Istanbul in the Morning?

Mornings are when Istanbul's food culture is at its most genuine. Bakers pull simit and pastries from the oven, shopkeepers in the Spice Bazaar open their stalls and the Kadikoy market fills with residents buying fish, olives and seasonal produce. Walking at this hour you see how people really eat, from a slow weekend-style breakfast to a quick plate of street food at the counter. The ferry ride in the middle of the walk gives a welcome pause and one of the best free views of the city.

Who Is This Food Tour For?

The walk suits first-time visitors who want an easy introduction to Turkish cuisine, as well as returning travellers who would like to discover Kadikoy beyond the usual sightseeing route. Come hungry: the tastings add up to a generous brunch and lunch, so there is no need to eat beforehand.

Good to Know

The route covers roughly 2.5 to 3.5 km at an easy pace with regular stops. Vegetarian options are limited and vegan diets are difficult to cater for, so please tell us about any dietary needs when you book. The tour finishes in Kadikoy, from where ferries return to Eminonu, Karakoy and Besiktas every few minutes.

Spice Bazaar to Kadikoy Food Walk

You meet your food guide in the morning in the old city, a few steps from the Spice Bazaar in Eminonu. Inside the vaulted market, built in the 1660s as part of the New Mosque complex, you taste several kinds of Turkish delight, dried fruits and nuts while learning how spices from the old trade routes shaped Ottoman cooking. Next comes a traditional Turkish breakfast at a local eatery: white cheese and aged kasar, olives, honey with kaymak, tomatoes and cucumbers, eggs, warm bread and glasses of black tea. From the Eminonu pier you board a public ferry and cross the Bosphorus to Asia, with the domes and minarets of the historic peninsula behind you and the Maiden's Tower ahead. In Kadikoy the walk continues through the market streets, stopping at around eight eateries for tastings that may include stuffed mussels with lemon, a classic doner-based dish such as iskender with yoghurt and tomato butter, savoury street snacks, baklava and stretchy Turkish ice cream, along with drinks such as ayran, salep or sherbet. The morning ends with a cup of Turkish coffee in a traditional coffee house, where your guide shares tips for the rest of your stay. The tour finishes in Kadikoy after about five and a half hours.
