My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!

- Neve Shalom Synagogue: the largest synagogue in Istanbul and the heart of today's community in Galata
- Museum of Turkish Jews: the Quincentennial Foundation collection, housed in the Neve Shalom complex since 2015
- Kamondo Stairs: the elegant curved stairway built by the Camondo banking family in Galata
- Galata Tower and the Ashkenazi and Italian synagogues: a walk through the historic Jewish streets of Galata
- Haskoy: a drive along the Golden Horn through a district that was home to Jews for centuries
- Balat: the Ahrida and Yanbol synagogues and the colourful lanes of the old Jewish quarter
Five Hundred Years of Jewish History
When Sephardic Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, Sultan Bayezid II welcomed them to the Ottoman Empire, and many settled in Istanbul beside the older Romaniote community. Balat and Haskoy on the Golden Horn grew into lively Jewish neighbourhoods, while Galata later became the centre of commercial and community life. The Ahrida Synagogue in Balat, with its unusual boat-shaped tevah, is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in the city, and the Museum of Turkish Jews tells the story of this coexistence through documents, textiles and religious objects.
Synagogue Visits: Please Plan Ahead
For security reasons, visits to synagogues and the museum must be approved in advance by the Jewish community of Turkey. We need clear copies of the passports of all guests at least five working days before your tour, and everyone must carry the original passport on the day. Synagogues and the museum are closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays, and some may only be seen from outside if permission is not granted for a particular date.

Galata, Haskoy & Balat Jewish Heritage Day
Your private guide and driver pick you up from your hotel in the morning and drive to Galata, the historic district across the Golden Horn from the old city. The day begins at Neve Shalom Synagogue, inaugurated in 1951 and today the main synagogue of the Istanbul community, where your guide explains the history and traditions of Turkish Jewry. In the same complex you visit the Museum of Turkish Jews, created by the Quincentennial Foundation, whose exhibits cover everything from Ottoman-era documents to Sephardic wedding dresses and Ladino newspapers. A short walk leads past the Ashkenazi Synagogue on Yuksekkaldirim Street and the Italian Synagogue, founded by Jewish families from Italy, to the Kamondo Stairs, the graceful stairway built in the 1870s by the Camondo family, who also funded schools and charities in the area. You pause at the foot of Galata Tower, raised by the Genoese in 1348, before stopping for lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon your driver follows the Golden Horn through Haskoy, once home to Karaite and Rabbanite Jews and to one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the city, and continues to Balat. Here you visit the Ahrida Synagogue, founded by Jews from Ohrid in the 15th century, and the Yanbol Synagogue, named after the Bulgarian town of Yambol, before strolling through the narrow streets of the old Jewish quarter with its colourful bay-windowed houses and the former Or-Ahayim Jewish hospital. At the end of the day you are driven back to your hotel.

What Our Travellers Say
Real, verified reviews from travellers who explored Turkey with us.
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
