This daily Ankara tour from Istanbul lets you see the essential sights of Turkey's capital in a single, well-organised day, travelling by road through the Anatolian countryside and returning to Istanbul the same evening. It is an ideal day tour for travellers interested in the founding of the modern Republic and in the ancient cultures that shaped Anatolia.
This Ankara Tour also works as a shore excursion from the Istanbul cruise port — a popular choice for passengers who have one day ashore. As a private excursion it is fully flexible — pickup is right at the pier, the pace follows your group, and we make sure you are back on board well before departure. Tell us how many hours your ship stays in port and we will confirm that the full programme fits comfortably. Simply share your cruise itinerary and the date you are in Istanbul, and we will reserve your places.
Ankara became the capital in 1923, but its story is far older. The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, housed in a restored Ottoman covered market and caravanserai, displays finds from prehistoric settlements, Hittite reliefs, Phrygian bronzes from the Gordion region and Urartian metalwork, making it one of the most important archaeological collections in the country. On the hill above, the citadel's layered walls reflect Roman, Byzantine and Seljuk building phases, and the lanes inside still hold traditional houses. Anıtkabir, completed in 1953, is the resting place of Atatürk; its vast ceremonial square, colonnades and museum tell the story of the War of Independence and the birth of the Republic.
This daily excursion includes hotel pick-up and return transfer in Istanbul, an English-speaking guide, lunch and the entrance fees for the sites in the programme. The drive is around four hours in each direction, so it is a long day; dress modestly and comfortably for the mausoleum and the walk up to the citadel. Flights, insurance and personal expenses are not included.

Ankara Capital City Programme Your driver collects you from your hotel in Istanbul in the morning, and at around 08:00 the vehicle sets off east on the approximately four-hour drive to Ankara, crossing rolling farmland and hills of north-western Anatolia. You reach the capital at about 12:30, where you stop for lunch at a local restaurant before your English-speaking guide leads the sightseeing. The afternoon begins at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, whose galleries trace human history in the region from Stone Age and Neolithic settlements through the Hittite, Phrygian and Urartian kingdoms and later cultures. From there you continue up to Ankara Castle, walking along the old citadel walls and through the historic quarter for panoramic views over the city. The final visit is Anıtkabir, the solemn mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Turkish Republic, where your guide explains his life and legacy as you cross the ceremonial avenue and courtyard. After the sightseeing you board the vehicle for the return drive and are dropped back at your Istanbul hotel in the evening.

It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
