This week-long programme starts in Cappadocia and finishes in Istanbul, combining four guided full-day tours with free time in both places. On arrival at Istanbul Airport you connect to a domestic flight to Kayseri or Nevşehir, where your guide meets you and takes you to your hotel for dinner. If you would like to take part in the optional hot air balloon flight the next morning, you can register with your guide on the first evening.
The Red Tour on day two covers Uçhisar Castle, the highest point of Cappadocia; Göreme Open Air Museum, famous for its 10th-century frescoes; the abandoned cave village of Çavuşin; lunch in Avanos and a pottery workshop; Devrent Valley with its animal-shaped rocks; wine tasting in Ürgüp; and the Three Beauties fairy chimneys. The Green Tour on day three begins at Özkonak Underground City, 55 metres deep with eight levels open to visitors, continues with a 3 km walk in the 16 km long Ihlara Valley and a visit to one of its rock-cut churches, lunch beside the river in Belisırma village, Selime Monastery carved by monks in the 13th century and a stop at Pigeon Valley.
Day four leaves time for shopping in Cappadocia before an evening flight from Kayseri to Istanbul. The Istanbul city tour on day five visits Topkapı Palace, home of the Ottoman court for about four centuries, the Blue Mosque with its Iznik tiles, the Hippodrome with its three monuments and, after lunch, the Spice Bazaar. Day six is spent on the Bosphorus cruise, passing Dolmabahçe Palace, Yıldız and Çırağan palaces and Ortaköy, with Rumeli Fortress, Beylerbeyi Palace, the Bosphorus Bridge and Çamlıca Hill also on the programme, followed by a shopping tour with carpet weaving, jewellery and leatherwear demonstrations.
Included are three nights in Cappadocia and three nights in Istanbul, six breakfasts, four lunches and three dinners, airport transfers, air-conditioned transport, professional English-speaking guides and the guided Red Tour, Green Tour, Istanbul city tour and Bosphorus cruise. International and domestic flights, the optional balloon flight and the door prices of Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern are not included. After landing at Istanbul Airport, walk to the domestic terminal and take your connecting flight to Cappadocia (not included). Your guide meets you on arrival and transfers you to the hotel. After breakfast you are collected from the hotel between 08:00 and 09:30 for the Red Tour of this volcanic region, whose fairy chimneys began forming about 10 million years ago. The first stop is Uçhisar Castle, the highest point of Cappadocia, followed by Göreme Open Air Museum and its 10th-century frescoes of the life of Jesus and the monks. You continue to Çavuşin, an abandoned village of old Greek cave houses, and have lunch at a restaurant in Avanos before visiting a pottery workshop. In the afternoon you see the animal-shaped rocks of Devrent (Imagination) Valley, stop at a wine shop in Ürgüp for tasting and end at the Three Beauties. Back at the hotel around 18:00. Dinner and overnight in Cappadocia.
Pick-up between 08:00 and 09:30 for the Green Tour. You first explore Özkonak Underground City, one of the best preserved in Cappadocia, 55 metres deep with eight levels open to visitors. Then drive to Ihlara Valley, a 16 km canyon lined with rock-carved churches, for a 3 km walk that includes a visit to one of the churches. Lunch is served beside the river in Belisırma village. Afterwards you visit Selime Monastery, a 13th-century rock-cut monastery hewn by Christian monks, and stop at Pigeon Valley on the way back. Dinner and overnight in Cappadocia.
After breakfast you have free time for shopping in Cappadocia. In the evening you transfer to Kayseri airport for the domestic flight to Istanbul (not included) and are driven from Istanbul airport to your hotel. Overnight in Istanbul.
Departure at 08:30 for the guided city tour. Topkapı Palace, home of the Ottoman court for about four centuries, displays porcelain, sultans’ robes, the jewels of the Imperial Treasury and the Holy Relics (entrance paid at the door). Next is the Blue Mosque, known for the blue Iznik tiles of its interior, and the Hippodrome with the Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpentine Column and the Column of Constantine. After lunch you visit the Spice Bazaar, filled with the scents of cinnamon, saffron, mint and thyme. The evening is free. Overnight in Istanbul. Please bring a scarf for the mosque visit.
Pick-up at 08:30 for the Bosphorus cruise along the strait between Europe and Asia, lined with wooden villas, marble palaces and fishing villages. From the boat you see Dolmabahçe Palace, the pavilions of Yıldız Palace, Çırağan Palace and Ortaköy, where a church, a mosque and a synagogue stand side by side. The programme also includes Rumeli Fortress, completed in 1452, Beylerbeyi Palace on the Asian shore, the Bosphorus Bridge and Çamlıca Hill, the highest point of Istanbul. A shopping tour follows with carpet weaving, a jewellery and handicraft centre and a leatherwear show. The evening is free. Overnight in Istanbul.
After the open buffet breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport for your flight home. End of the tour.
