The journey opens in Cappadocia, a dreamlike landscape of volcanic rock carved into fairy chimneys, cave churches and underground cities. You explore the citadel of Uçhisar, the frescoed chapels of the Göreme Open-Air Museum, the deep tunnels of the Özkonak Underground City, the valleys of Love and Devrent, the potters of Avanos and the Three Beauties fairy chimneys, with the option of a dawn hot-air balloon flight. Heading south you pause in Konya at the serene Mausoleum of Mevlâna, the mystic who inspired the Whirling Dervishes.
On the Mediterranean coast, Antalya welcomes you with the Roman and Ottoman lanes of Kaleiçi, the triumphal Hadrian's Gate, the Broken Minaret and the seafront Hıdırlık Tower, followed by a relaxing boat trip. The tour finishes in imperial Istanbul, where you cruise the Bosphorus between Europe and Asia and tour the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Topkapı and Dolmabahçe palaces. A full day among Cappadocia's wonders: the Özkonak Underground City, the rock-cut churches of the Göreme Open-Air Museum, the cave village of Çavuşin, the potters of Avanos, the famous Love Valley, the lunar formations of Devrent (Imagination) Valley and the Three Beauties fairy chimneys. You drive to Konya, stopping to visit the green-tiled Mausoleum of Mevlâna, the mystic founder of the Sufi order of the Whirling Dervishes, before continuing over the Taurus Mountains to the Mediterranean resort of Antalya. (For smaller groups this day may be made by domestic flight, in which case lunch is not included.) Dinner and overnight in Antalya.
You explore Kaleiçi, Antalya's atmospheric old town, with its marina, Clock Tower, the triumphal Hadrian's Gate, the Broken Minaret of the Korkut Mosque and the Hıdırlık Tower overlooking the sea. After lunch you enjoy a two-hour boat trip along the turquoise coast. Dinner and overnight in Antalya.
You travel to Istanbul and, after hotel check-in, set out on a Bosphorus cruise along the strait dividing Europe and Asia, passing wooden mansions, marble palaces and the mighty Rumeli Fortress, with Beylerbeyi Palace on the Asian shore. A gala dinner is served on board. Overnight in Istanbul.
A day in the historic heart of Istanbul: the ancient Hippodrome with its Obelisk of Theodosius and Serpentine Column, the blue-tiled Blue Mosque and the great Byzantine church-turned-mosque of Hagia Sophia, followed by the colourful bazaar. Dinner and overnight in Istanbul.
You visit the opulent Dolmabahçe Palace on the Bosphorus shore, the last residence of the Ottoman sultans, and Topkapı Palace, the imperial court for four centuries with its treasury and sacred relics, with free time for shopping. Dinner and overnight in Istanbul.
