After breakfast we tour Istanbul's magnificent Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage area. We admire the exterior and interior of Hagia Sophia, explore the opulent Topkapi Palace of the Ottoman sultans, visit the elegant Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque, walk through the ancient Hippodrome with its historic monuments and browse the aromatic Spice Bazaar. After an early packed breakfast we drive to the Gallipoli Peninsula, the moving World War I battlefields where we visit Anzac Cove and the Ariburnu Cemetery, Beach Cemetery, Shrapnel Valley and Plugge's Plateau, guided through the events of the 1915 campaign. After breakfast we visit the legendary archaeological site of Troy with its replica Trojan Horse, immortalised by Homer's Iliad. We continue to Pergamon to explore its dramatic hilltop acropolis, temples and the site of one of the ancient world's greatest libraries, with a stop at a jewellery centre. After breakfast we enjoy a fully guided tour of Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world, including the Temple of Artemis site, Curetes Street, the Roman baths, the iconic Library of Celsus and the Grand Theatre. We visit a traditional carpet-weaving centre, then the picturesque hillside village of Şirince, famous for its vineyards and fruit wines, and a leather-production centre.
