Why visit Patmos?
Patmos is a small island in the Dodecanese and one of the most important Christian pilgrimage places in the Aegean. Tradition says that St John wrote the Book of Revelation here, in a cave on the hillside above the harbour, around AD 95.
The Monastery of St John the Theologian rises like a fortress above the white houses of Chora. It was founded in 1088 by the Blessed Christodoulos and has been in use for more than 900 years. Its museum keeps icons, manuscripts, vestments and silverware. The monastery, the Cave of the Apocalypse and the historic centre of Chora together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Arriving on Patmos
Ferries arrive at Skala, the island’s only port and its busiest village. All our tours start here, so they are easy to combine with a ferry arrival or a stay on the island. Ferry connections change by season, so tell us your dates and we will confirm the options for your trip.
Staying on Patmos
Skala is the most practical base, with restaurants and the ferry at your door. Kampos and Grikos are quieter bays on the coast. Hotels on the island open mainly from April to October, so your choice is smaller in winter.
