This Balat walking tour from Istanbul is a guided daily tour through the old quarters along the Golden Horn, where Greek, Jewish, Armenian and Bulgarian communities lived side by side for centuries. It is a relaxed day tour on foot, led by a professional English-speaking guide, that reads the city layer by layer, from Byzantine walls to Ottoman-era houses.
Balat and neighbouring Fener are among the oldest inhabited corners of Istanbul, and parts of the area fall within the UNESCO-listed Historic Areas of Istanbul. In the Ottoman period Jewish families were settled here, and the Ahrida Synagogue, founded by Jews from Ohrid, still recalls that story. Fener has been the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate since the early 17th century, watched over by the imposing red building of the Phanar Greek Orthodox College. Nearby, the small Muhliotissa church is known as the only Byzantine church in the city that has remained in Greek Orthodox use since the Ottoman conquest.
The Bulgarian Church of St Stephen was assembled at the end of the 19th century from prefabricated iron panels, an unusual feat of engineering that makes it unique in Istanbul. The walk ends near the Theodosian land walls at Tekfur Palace, the best-surviving Byzantine palace building in the city, part of the former Blachernae palace quarter. This Balat day trip suits history lovers, culture seekers and photographers. As a daily excursion from Istanbul it is fully guided in English, includes air-conditioned transport and a return transfer to your hotel, and is suitable for ages 12 and above. Wear comfortable shoes; modest clothing is advised for visiting places of worship.

Balat, Fener & Tekfur Palace Walk Your guide meets you in Istanbul and the group travels by air-conditioned, non-smoking vehicle to the Golden Horn to begin the walk in Balat. First you stroll through the renovated streets, where rows of houses painted in bright shades climb the hillside and every corner offers a new photograph. Your guide explains how the quarter developed and why Jewish families were resettled here in Ottoman times; of the seven synagogues that once stood in Balat, you visit the two that survive in good condition, Ahrida and Yambol. The route then turns to the Christian heritage of the area: the Armenian Church of Surp Hresdagabet and the striking cast-iron Bulgarian Church of St Stephen by the water, along with Fener highlights such as the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, the Red School and the Byzantine Church of St Mary of the Mongols. In the final part of the day you follow the ancient city walls to the ruins of Tekfur Palace, a late Byzantine residence that closes the story of the old town. Lunch is not included, so you are free to try one of the neighbourhood cafes along the way. Afterwards you are transferred back to your hotel.

My husband and I chose Inca Tour for our honeymoon and we are so glad we did. The boutique hotel selection was beautiful and the Bosphorus dinner cruise was so romantic. Thank you for making our trip special!
It was important for us to have a guide who spoke Russian, and Ender was wonderful. He explained every detail at Dolmabahce Palace. The Princes Islands day trip was a beautiful break from the busy city.
Our guide Ender was incredibly knowledgeable about Turkish history. The hot-air balloon ride at sunrise in Cappadocia was the highlight of our trip. Everything was perfectly organized — from airport pick-up to the last d...
Ender was our Italian-speaking guide and we felt like family. He took us to local spots tourists never see. The hotel choice in Sultanahmet was perfect for walking everywhere.
10+ years later we still talk about our Cappadocia balloon ride and the Bosphorus sunset cruise. Some memories are timeless. Thank you Inca Tour!
