The longest of our Sinop programmes takes you beyond the town itself and into the green interior of the province. Sinop, a natural harbour on the Black Sea settled by Greeks from Miletus in the 7th century BC and the home town of Diogenes, is your base for five nights. From here you explore museums and monuments, cook and taste local food, enjoy a day of rest in a Turkish bath and travel inland to the hilltop castle of Boyabat.
The guided city day includes the Sinop Archaeological Museum, with its Seljuk tomb and Serapeum remains, the Ethnography Museum and the Historic Sinop Fortress Prison, a stone jail added in 1887 to ancient walls and turned into a museum in 1999 after holding many prominent Turkish intellectuals. You also visit the Diogenes monument, the fortress, the Mehmet Mosque, the Byzantine Balatlar Church of AD 660 and Inceburun Lighthouse, kept by the same family for five generations, with a lunch stop at a local restaurant. A second day brings a practical Turkish cooking lesson with lunch, a fruit wine experience with winemakers in the vineyards and a regional leather production centre.
After a free day with a transfer to a traditional hamam, you head to Boyabat Castle, where Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman layers meet and staircases descend to underground passages and storage chambers beneath the walls. After breakfast you are picked up at 08:30. Begin in the Archaeological Museum, established in 1970, whose collection and garden include a Seljuk tomb and what remains of a temple to Serapis, and continue to the Ethnography Museum. The Historic Sinop Fortress Prison comes next: built in 1887 within fortifications from Sinop's days as a Greek colony, it once held well-known Turkish thinkers and has been open as a museum since 1999. You will also see the Diogenes monument, the historic fortress and the Mehmet Mosque, with a lunch stop at a local restaurant. The afternoon takes you to Balatlar Church, a Byzantine basilica from AD 660, and to Inceburun Lighthouse, an active light on the Black Sea kept by one family for five generations. Following an 08:30 pick-up, a brief orientation and panoramic tour of Sinop lead you to your cooking lesson, where you prepare a selection of dishes from different Turkish regions and then eat them for lunch. In the afternoon you meet winemakers in the vineyards to see how fruit wine is produced, followed by an evening quiz on the process. At 08:30 you set out after breakfast for Boyabat, a district of Sinop province crowned by a castle that bears traces of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The fortress now serves as a museum telling the story of the region. Its most intriguing feature lies below ground: staircases lead down to passages and chambers beneath the walls, once used for storing water and hiding food supplies. Your guide explains how the castle protected the valley over the centuries before you return to Sinop for the night.
